NIGHT routes operated through an area covered by more than one daytime route, because of the reduced patronage experienced after dark (and in some cases during daylight hours at weekends also). They were a concept of Westbus and all operated only between 1 November 2004 and 11 October 2009. (The prefix “N” is also used for Nightride bus routes, which operate in place of trains between roughly midnight and dawn, under contract to the Ministry of Transport. Even though many of those routes are operated by private bus operators, their contractual arrangements mean that they are effectively Government-owned routes, and so they are not included in these lists.)
